Watch out, Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods: Trader Joe’s is coming for you with protein-packed burger patties at a fraction of the cost.
Leave it to the Vegan Trader Joe’s Facebook group to have the inside scoop on one of the healthy grocer’s most impressive new products to date. A Trader Joe’s employee recently shared a photo of an item she spotted in their crew member holiday products guide: Protein Patties—a new plant-based burger option that’s much more meaty than what you can currently find in the store.
Similarly packaged to its competition, the perishable patties look as though they’ll be sold in the refrigerated section of Trader Joe’s. And while there isn’t much information available at this point, the crew member said each pack of two 4 oz. patties is said to cost $3.99, although that has yet to be confirmed. In comparison, Beyond Meat patties currently cost $6 to $8 for a pack of two, depending on where you buy them.
The protein in TJ’s patties hold up to the competition, too. Each 4 oz. patty contains 18 grams, but the ingredients are currently unknown. The Beyond Burger contains 20 grams of protein per 4 oz. patty, while the Impossible Burger contains 19 grams of protein per 4 oz. patty.
There’s no word on when the Protein Patties will officially be introduced at Trader Joe’s, but let’s hope it’s soon—because my stomach is growling.
