Elmhurst Dairy, one of New York’s main milk suppliers, is doing something pretty much unheard of: going vegan. The plant has been running in Queens for the past 90 years, but due to a decreased customer demand of milk products, it was time for them to make a major change.
When speaking to the New York Times last year, Henry Schwartz, the company’s CEO, said he tried to keep their plant going strong because it was his father’s and he asked him to, but couldn’t stay afloat because of all the losses.
“Pasteurized fluid milk has sort of gone out of style,” Schwartz said. “There isn’t much room for our kind of a plant.”
So, what was a smart next move for a milk plant? Going completely plant-based, of course. The company — now simply named Elmhurst — recently launched their new line of nut milks at the Natural Foods Expo West in Anaheim, CA. With four flavors of nut milk coming out next month — almond, walnut, cashew, and hazelnut — they’re jumping on the vegan revolution, further showing the world animal products don’t belong on shelves.
Elmhurst is also working with Dr. Cheryl Mitchell, an expert in creamy, nutritious, and delicious plant-based milks, to ensure each flavor is not only irresistible but also packed with whole, raw ingredients and absolutely no fillers. They call their products the “world’s finest nut milks,” and we’re excited to see if they live up to the hype.
