There are so many junk foods that just so happen to be accidentally vegan, from Oreos to Airheads. Unfortunately, Nutella—beautiful, beautiful Nutella with its creamy melt-in-your-mouth perfection—isn’t one of them. But it turns out you don’t need the store-bought stuff, anyway. It only takes five minutes to make your own batch at home.
BUBBLE—a company that only sells products made with clean, wholesome ingredients—has a popular vegan Nutella-like hazelnut spread called Hella, and the name speaks for itself: It’s hella gooey, hella chocolatey, and hella good. The craziest part is that it’s made with only three simple ingredients. So if you don’t want to buy a jar, you can easily make it yourself.
To create your own Nutella, start with a base of roasted hazelnuts, then add in some coconut sugar and cacao nibs. (Or, if you have dark chocolate chips on hand, those will work too.) After you blend everything up, give it a taste: If you want it to be more chocolatey or sugary, add in bit by bit until your taste buds are completely satisfied.
Once you spread the final product onto a piece of toast, one thing’s for sure: You’ll never miss the real deal ever again.
